Colloquium on the Proposed Ethiopian National Dialogue Call for Papers
January 20, 2022
The Board of the Forum for Ethiopian Scholars and Professionals (FESP) is pleased to announce that it will be holding a special online colloquium on two successive Saturdays of March 12 and 19, 2022. The colloquium will be held in cooperation with the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) of Addis Ababa University. The theme and sub-themes are the recently proposed Ethiopian National Dialogue (Amharic version). National dialogue is often seen as a vehicle to an end, where the path to sustainable peace, human security, development, the rule of law, and accountability are defined, and crisis is resolved. The Board welcomes the initiative and hopes that the
colloquium will be one of the forums for scholars of substance, professionals and former Statesmen (Stateswomen) to contribute towards the development of a shared and workable national policy for transitioning the country into a stable order.
The literature on ethnoreligious conflicts and national dialogue initiatives taken by various governments have had mixed successes. Hence, it is imperative that Ethiopia learns from international experience and contextually examine the factors that attenuate (accentuate) its
own crisis and conflicts resolution efforts. Successful peace and reconciliation programs require more than good intentions and the promulgations of laws. It also needs to understand the incentives and behaviors of the various State and non-State actors (United Nations). The purpose of the colloquium is to provide a forum for new and established scholars, professionals, international civil servants and former Statesmen and Stateswomen to reflect on their findings and experiences. The scope of the themes and sub-themes is wide enough to accommodate various related topics. The limit is that the paper shall not directly or indirectly de-legitimize the age-old Ethiopian State.
